Do you believe in miracles?
Both Italian DPs score in TFC pre-season debut. Does it mean anything?
Look, you’d rather win than lose, I guess. So, that TFC won it’s pre-season opener 2-0 over Nashville is a good start to a long season. That the two Italian DPs scored the goals, well, that’s the thing that most people are going to focus on.
But, does it mean anything?
The win? No. Nothing. I’d show you numbers to back this opinion up — God knows I’ve looked for them during my now 17 years of writing about this team (good God how did that happen???) — but the very idea exhausts me. Just trust me, ok. There is zero correlation between wins in the preseason and wins when it matters.
Truly, none. I think most of you might appreciate that already, however.
But does Tweetle Doo and Tweetle Dee scoring matter?
On that front I’ve gotta go with a definitely maybe. A definitive definitely maybe, even.
And, not only because it puts them one step closer to me not referring to them as Tweetle Dee and Tweetle Doo in my copy (in my defense Tweetle Doo is easier to spell than Bernardeschi). No, it really does matter that these guys perform. So, every goal that they can put in — no matter the game — is important.
As I wrote last week, if Toronto can get average DP production from these two jokers then they can definitely maybe be mediocre. Definitively. Even more importantly than that they can maybe convince, I don’t know, Torino that they are players that can help them chase a Europa League spot.
They aren’t — well, Insigne might be, if he’s motivated. I’m sure there are night clubs in Turin that Tweetle Doo can open — but a few goals now could create the perspective that they are.
I know there are some of you out there that are hoping for a complete turnaround from these guys — that John Herdman will johnherdman them into guys that run through walls to win. If they do that then they can vape their way into the heart of even the most cynical of TFC fan.
I mean, Jozy Altidore is beloved here and the man was a pain. in. the. ass. So, I suppose it’s possible. Except that you get the feeling that Jozy would still run through a wall for TFC fans, while Tweetle Doo will definitely maybe talk shit about the club on a Montreal fan’s podcast sometime in 2026.
When I’m saying here is don’t hold your breath. These guys showed us who they are and who that is are guys that aren’t going to fight for things when they get hard.
Things might not get too hard this spring though. So, let’s hope these two keep doing stuff. If they do, don’t get fooled. No, sell (slightly) high(er than they were valued after last season). Even if it makes the club slightly worse for the second half of the season.
Definitely and definitively. No maybe about it.
